This is Dr Rebish’s patient (my husband who is also a dermatologist), who has comedonal and inflammatory acne. A typical acne treatment regimen would be oral antibiotics and topical medications including tretinoin. Tretinoin is the best treatment to help prevent the blackheads and whiteheads which are the basic building blocks to acne. Extractions are helpful, because they will aid in clearing the existing comedones, which tretinoin cannot do – tretinoin mainly is effective at preventing new blackheads and whiteheads from forming and softening present comedones up so that they are more easily extracted.
